The Effect of Motivational Interviewing Program on Self-Efficacy and Suicidal Ideation of Suicide Attempters

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of Motivational Interviewing Program on self-efficacy and suicidal ideation of suicide attempters, by applying the program to suicide attempters registered in the community mental health center. The program was conducted for 60 minutes, once a week, for a total of four sessions. In order to verify the effectiveness, the non-identical group¡¯s pre- and post-examinations were simulated with quasi-experimental design. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 19.0 program, with conduct of descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney U Test, and Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. As a result, the overall self-efficacy of Motivational Interviewing Program participants was significantly improved, along with significant reduction in suicidal ideation. The results of this research suggest that the Motivational Interviewing Program is effective in enhancing the self-efficacy of suicide attempters and reducing their suicidal ideation, and that it can be utilized as a professional suicide prevention intervention in the community.
